The Icelandic Fantacy Girl

ÁSDÍS ROBBERY!
In Iceland, like most places, we have our sex symbols. Perhaps borrowed from another culture, mostly from Hollywood. A particular audience consisting mostly of males will probably always have their Pamela Anderson-esque fantasy girl, bigger than average breasts/small waist and all, and some sexy pictures readily available upon internet search, Thank You! We have our very own here in the Mid-Atlantic. Her name is Ásdís Rán, but the name "Rán" also means heist, or robbery! A little word play, today.
Ásdís is an interesting lady. Love her or hate her, she grabs attention without mentionable effort. Her looks are, well, NOTHING GUTS ("ekkert slor"- see last post/blog), but it´s her mind that intrigues the Icelandic population. Her ideas are pretty much individualist and anti-feminist (old school), her demeanor is sweet and poised. She strikes me as a modern day happy-go-lucky capitalist, and a content one. All about hard work: the gym, a lift of the breasts, meetings and posing and test-shots. She also has a family and seems to enjoy the balance of the traditional family unit and a glamourous life of parties at the Playboy Mansion, red-carpet events throughout Europe and racy photoshoots. She blogs, she gives young aspiring starlets advice, she grabs headlines.
The height of her climb into the media spotlight in Iceland was smack-in-the-middle of our recent economic boom. In my opinion, this is not so much a coincidence as it is a reflection of the cultural evolution during those times from the "old" Iceland to the "new". We went from a predominantly working-class nation of fishermen and farmers to hard-core capitalists in no time. Ásdís loves the self-made ethic and is the epitomy of a self-made woman. Business-wise and driven, this lady makes no excuses for her reign as the "blondie" sex symbol of Iceland and even, Bulgaria! Her notoriety is based not only on her sexy looks and demeanor, but seems to be based on where you stand on sexual politics and ideas about women´s place in the modern day society. Some aspire to be like her, others are angered by her. (There is more than one school of feminist thought around. Some might even call her a modern-day feminist but I am quite sure that the 50´s and 60´s generations would highly disagree.)
Personally, I am a fan of natural beauty. I have to admit though, that even though she tests some of my personal views on sexuality and women´s stature, and I don´t agree with most of hers, I do respect our differing opinions and find her to be, well, kind of fun. She really is a bit of a novelty. I enjoy observing the extraordinary life of this woman who epitomizes the modern-day American-style "sextress" in Europe. For now, of course, her enterprise is expanding at a fast rate! Like a thief about to produce a heist, Ásdís will continue to rob attention of the masses in Iceland and give women and men mixed emotions about their views on modern-day sexual politics. It´s an Ásdís Robbery, Ásdís Rán-style!
